Program Notes

Overture of the Maygreen Sprite (2024), winner of the 2024 Ruth Crawford Seeger International Composition Prize, is an energetic and cheerful tune that takes the audience through a bright forestry setting. The Maygreen Sprite is a fictional character, imagined by Sidon, that embodies her ideas of nature, springtime, beauty, and joy. Starting off with a burst of energy from mallet percussion, the overture begins with the Maygreen Sprite dancing through her home of the forest. This main motive of the piece involves many asymmetrical meters (switching between two different rhythms) and is designed to capture the carefree and buoyant aura of the Maygreen Sprite. The overture then transitions to a slower, more emotional section, where the Maygreen Sprite stops to take in the immense beauty of the forest, before finally returning to the main motive. Sidon hopes that within this quick overture she can communicate her love of nature and springtime joy.
