I was challenged to write a piece in the style of György Ligeti by Michael Daugherty. Hall is the result. This three movement solo viola work features dissonant harmonies and multiple textures. The first movement begins with a solemn motif that slowly gets developed until it becomes more angsty. The second movement is short and fiery, displaying the rough dissonance the viola can articulate. The last movement returns to a slower tempo but includes quick bursts of angst and fast motifs.
